For over two decades, the unmistakable roar of the HEMI V-8 has been the heartbeat of the Ram 1500. So when Ram announced its departure in 2023, loyalists weren't just disappointed -- they were vocal. And it seems Stellantis was listening. In a surprising but welcome reversal, the legendary engine is back.
At a press event earlier this year, Ram brand CEO Tim Kuniskis admitted: "Everyone makes mistakes… We dropped the HEMI -- we own it, and we fixed it." This rare industry about-face comes after vocal feedback from customers and dealers alike, who felt the new twin-turbo Hurricane I-6, while powerful, couldn't fully replace the emotional connection and proven capability of the HEMI.
Ram's full-size pickup sales reportedly declined nearly 18% year-over-year after the V-8 was pulled, according to industry analysts. That, combined with dealer pressure and overwhelming brand loyalty, sparked the comeback. The 2026 Ram 1500 will offer the 5.7L HEMI V-8 alongside the Hurricane engines, giving customers more choice than ever -- especially important in rural and towing-heavy areas like the Okanagan.
According to Stellantis' official announcement, the 5.7L HEMI will return with eTorque mild hybrid technology, offering up to 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. Available trims include Big Horn, Laramie, Longhorn, and Limited, with the Rebel to follow later in the model cycle.
Some trims will feature a standard Mopar cat-back exhaust (previously a $2,000 add-on) and a unique fender badge dubbed the "Symbol of Protest" -- a cheeky nod to the public pressure that brought the HEMI back.
With eTorque integration, the HEMI is expected to deliver improved fuel economy while maintaining exceptional towing capability -- up to 11,500 lbs -- and a smoother power band at low RPMs. For many, it strikes the perfect balance between classic grunt and modern efficiency.
While the Hurricane I-6 engines remain a technological leap forward, there's no denying the emotional pull and simplicity of a V-8. For those who crave it, the choice is back -- and it's better than ever.
From trailering boats to hauling equipment, Ram HEMI trucks have been a staple in Kelowna and across the Okanagan. At Kelowna Chrysler, we've seen firsthand how much this engine means to our customers -- and we're excited to welcome it back.
The best part? Ram's Employee Pricing is on now for select 2025 models, and we'll be offering pre-orders for the 2026 HEMI editions soon.
